How can I start chat? toggle
To start a chat, tap the friend or group you wish to chat with on the Friends tab, then tap Chat.

Problems with Chats

Problems sending or receiving messages toggle
If you are having problems sending or receiving messages, please try the following steps.

1. Update your LINE app from the URL below.
http://line.me/update
2. Restart your device.
3. Go back to the list of chats, then open the chat you are having problems with again.

Please note that sometimes it may take a while for a chat message to show up after you receive the notification.

Chat history disappeared toggle
Your chat history is saved in the app on your device. For this reason, you cannot carry over or restore your chat history in the following cases.

- If you deleted your chat history
- If you uninstalled then reinstalled your LINE app (including restoring the app from backup)
- If you changed to a new device

App crashes toggle
If the app crashes when sending messages, there may not be enough memory on your device. Please try the following steps.

1. Close all running apps
2. Restart LINE
3. Restart your device

If the app crashes only in specific chats, deleting the chat history for those chats may help. Please back up your chat history according to the steps in the article below.

Backing Up and Restoring Chats

If the app crashes every time you open a specific chat, the only way to solve the issue is to delete the chat history. Please back up chats with lots of messages regularly.

Problems with images, videos, and audio messages toggle
It may take some times to send, receive, and display images, videos, and audio messages. Images are only stored on our servers for a certain period of time, after which they can no longer be received. We are unable to provide details about how long images are stored.

By tapping the thumbnail received in a chat, you can save the image in your LINE app. To save it in the default gallery app on your device, please tap Save after opening the image.

Images saved in the LINE app will become unavailable if you delete the app's cache using a cache clearing app.

For problems with images, videos, and audio messages, please try the following.

1. Close all running apps.
2. Restart your device.
3. Update your LINE app from the URL below.

4. Update your OS.
5. Delete any unneeded apps and data on your device.

Chat History

Chat history disappeared toggle
Your chat history is saved in the app on your device. For this reason, you cannot carry over or restore your chat history in the following cases.

Backing up chats toggle
To back up (save) your chat history, please follow the steps below.

1. Select the chat you wish to save.
3. Tap the V icon at the top right of the screen.
4. Tap Settings.
5. Tap Export Chat History.

Please note that images will not be saved.

If you do not receive an email with your backup file, please check your junk or spam folder. If you have more than one email address, please try sending the file to another email address.

Chat-Related Features

Starting a group or multi-person chat toggle
Group chats
1. Select the group you wish to chat with from your friends list.
2. Tap Chat.  

Multi-person chats
1. Tap the friend you wish to chat with from the friends list.
2. Tap Chat.
3. Tap the V icon on the top right > Invite.
4. Select the friends you wish to add from the pop-up friends list.
5. Tap OK at the top right.

"Read" indication in group chats toggle
The number displayed beside the Read mark in group chats shows how many people have read your message. However, on some devices, the system marks the message as read once a notification is received, so the Read indication does not always mean that the user has seen the message. Please use the Read mark only as a rough indicator of whether your friends have read your message.

The time shown beside the Read mark is the time you sent the message, and not the time the recipient read it.

Please be assured that only the members of a chat can see the messages exchanged in it. LINE treats the chat history and other information of its users as important personal information, and handles them with maximum security.

Leaving a group or multi-person chat toggle
To leave a group or multi-person chat, please follow the steps below.

Leaving a group
1. From the friends list, swipe the group you wish to leave to the left.
2. Tap Leave.

Leaving a multi-person chat
1. From the chats list tap the multi-person chat you wish to leave.
2. Tap V at the top right of the screen.
3. Tap Leave.

Once all members of a group leave, all information posted to the group will be deleted.  If you leave a group or multi-person chat, you will no longer be able to restore the information you posted.

Creating Notes toggle
To create a note to share with your friends, please follow the steps below.

Groups
1. From the friends list, tap the group you wish to create the note in.
2. Tap Notes from the pop-up.
3. Tap New Note or the pencil icon on the bottom right of the screen.
4. Enter the text and tap Done at the top right of the screen.

1-on-1 Chats
1. Open the chat with the friend you wish to share the note with.
2. Swipe the chat screen to the left.
3. Tap New Note or the pencil icon at the bottom right.
4. Enter the text and tap Done at the top right of the screen.

You can attach the following contents to each note. 
- Up to a total of 20 stickers, images, and videos.
- One URL and location respectively. 
Only one of sound and animated stickers can be attached. These stickers cannot be attached along with normal stickers.

Editing and deleting posts toggle
To edit or delete a note, please follow the steps below.

1. Tap the note you wish to edit or delete.
2. Tap the three dots at the top right.
3. Select Edit or Delete, then tap OK.

Please note you can only edit and delete notes you created yourself. Currently, only text can be edited.

1. From the friends list, tap the group you wish to create the album in.

2. Tap Albums from the pop-up.

3. Tap Make a new Album or the + icon at the bottom right.

4.Tap the check marks on the photos you wish to add to the album, then tap Select > Create Album.

 

1-on-1 Chats

1. Open the chat with the friend you want to share the album with.

2. Swipe the chat screen twice to the left.

3. Tap Make a new Album or the + icon at the bottom right.

4.Tap the check marks on the photos you wish to add to the album, then tap Select > Create Album.

Deleting an album toggle

To upload photos to an album, please follow the steps below.

Saving and deleting photos from albums toggle
To save or delete photos from an album, please follow the steps below.

1. Tap the relevant album.
2. Tap the photo you wish to save or delete.
3. Tap Save to save the photo in your device, or from the menu icon of the bottom left tap Delete Photo to delete the photo.

Any member of a group can save and delete photos from albums. Please note that deleted photos cannot be restored.

I do not want to receive notifications for notes toggle
When your friend or group member Likes or comments on your note, you will be notified by push notifications and Notifications on the menu of your Timeline.

If you do not want to receive the notifications, please follow the steps below.

Groups
1. From the friends list, tap the relevant group.
2. From the pop-up screen, tap Chat, Notes or Albums.
3. Tap the V icon at the top right > Settings.
4. Turn the Notes Notifications OFF.

1-on-1 Chats
1. Open the chat, notes or albums with the relevant friend.

Posts and albums on the timeline toggle
Posts and albums displayed on your Timeline are only visible to the group or friend they are shared with. Non-members of the group or chat that the post or album is shared in will not be able to see it.

Your posts, albums, and photos will not be deleted even if you leave a group. If there are any posts, albums, and photos that you want to delete, please do so before leaving the group.

Renaming an album toggle
1. Tap the relevant album (if you have not named the album, the posted date will appear as the name).
2. Tap the three dots at the top right.
3. Tap Rename Album.
4. Enter an album name and tap Save.

Album names must be between 1 to 20 characters, and you cannot use the same album name twice.

About stickers and emoji that appear when entering in letters toggle
The suggestion feature helps you find emoji and stickers that match words you enter. This feature currently offers support for English, Japanese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and more. Even more languages will be added in the future.

Only the default free emoji and stickers and some paid stickers are supported. Support for more stickers will be added in the future.

To turn suggestions on or off, please follow the steps below.

1. Go to the More or "..." tab > Settings > “Chats & Voice Calls.”
2. Tap Display Suggestions, then turn Display Suggestions on or off.

Archiving chats toggle
To archive a chat, please follow the steps below.

1. Tap the chat icon at the bottom.
2. Tap Edit at the top left.
3. From Edit Chat List, select the chat you wish to archive and tap Archive.

To view a chat again, please follow the steps below.

1-on-1 and Group Chats
1. Select the friend or group from the friends list.
2. Tap Chat on the pop-up.

If you cannot find the friend on your friends list because you have not added them, have deleted them, or they have deleted their account, you will not be able to view the chat again.

Multi-Person Chats
Ask one of your friends to send a message in the chat.

Searching for chats toggle
You can search chat rooms and posted messages using the search box on the chats list.

1. Pull the list of chats down or tap the search icon at the top right.
2. Enter the keywords you wish to search for in the "Official accounts, Friend, Chats" box.

Reporting toggle
If you receive spam messages from people who are not your friends, you can report them. 

To report a user, please follow the steps below.
1. Open the relevant chat, then tap the V icon at the top right.
2. Tap Settings > Report.
3. Select the reason you are reporting the user, then tap Agree and Send.

After receiving your report, we will look into the matter and take appropriate action if the user is found to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions of Use. Please understand that we cannot inform you of the detailed results of our investigation and the action taken in order to protect the user's privacy.

Chat Security

Possibility of messages being viewed by third parties toggle
As messages sent in chats are covered by the law governing privacy of communications, no LINE employee or third party, besides the chat participants themselves, will be able to view them. LINE treats the chat history and other information of its users as important personal information, and handles them with the maximum level of security possible.

Preventing messages from strangers toggle
To avoid messages from strangers, please refer to the measures below.

To reject users besides your friends from messaging you
1. Tap the settings icon > Privacy.
2. Turn ON Filter Messages.

If you receive messages from strangers on LINE, please block them by following the steps below.

1. Open the chat sent by the user and tap the V icon at the top right.
2. Tap Block.

Blocking LINE GAME messages toggle
To block messages from LINE GAME apps, please follow the steps below.

1. Tap the settings icon > Notifications > Authorized Apps.
2. Tap the app you do not want to receive notifications for.
3. Turn OFF Receive Messages or Receive Notifications.

You will no longer receive messages from the app by turning OFF Receive Messages; however you will still receive gifts awarded to you from friends. 

By turning OFF Receive Notification, you will still receive LINE chat messages; however you will not receive notifications for them.

What is Letter Sealing? toggle
Letter Sealing is a feature that provides End-to-end encryption (E2EE) for chat room messages. E2EE is a communication system designed so that messages saved on our servers are encrypted and cannot be read by anyone except the sender and receiver of the message.

You will be able to read your chat messages as usual, but with added security if both the sender and receiver have turned on Letter Sealing.

If you use the PC version of LINE (Windows and Mac OS) or the iPad version after turning on Letter Sealing for the first time, you will be required to verify your identity on the smartphone version of LINE with a 6 digit verification number.

Letter Sealing can only be used on LINE versions 5.3.0 or later. If you are using a version earlier than 5.3.0, please update the app from here.

Keep

What is Keep? toggle
Keep is a personal storage service that allows you to upload chat room messages (text), photos, videos and voice messages directly to LINE's servers. It is a great feature that allows you to easily store your content and share them with your friends.

Store up to 1GB of data! However, please be aware that files over 50MB will only be saved for 30 days.

How can I check my saved files? toggle
To see your files stored in Keep:

1. Tap the friends icon.
2. Under Profile, tap your name.
3. Tap Keep on the pop-up screen.

How long can I save files? toggle
Keep has a storage capacity of 1GB with no limit on the storage period.
However, individual files over 50MB are limited to a 30 day storage period. On the list screen, these files will appear with a D-29 mark and the number will countdown daily.

I can't save my photos toggle
If you are unable to upload photos, please see the following:

1. You may be over Keep's storage limit
Keep has a total storage limit of 1GB. If you have reached the 1GB limit, you will not be able to save any more files. Please try freeing up some space before adding more files.

2. The file size is too large
You cannot save photos over a certain size and resolution.
The following file sizes can be uploaded:
 - 1 file up to 20MB
 - Resolution up to 10,000x10,000 pixels

Free Voice and Video Calls

If you are having problems with free voice calls, the following may be to blame.

1. Your friend is not a LINE user.
2. You may be using an older version of LINE.
3. One of you may be blocking the other.
4. You have "Receive Voice Calls" turned off.
5. You are not mutual friends. Voice calls cannot be made if only one of you has the other as a friend.

If you are still having problems after checking the above, please try the following steps.

If you are having problems with video calls, the following may be to blame.

1. Your friend is not a LINE user.
2. You may be using an older version of LINE.
3. One of you may be blocking the other.

6. Your device does not meet the recommended specs.
- Video calls can only be made on iOS 6.0 or Android 2.3 and higher.

Unable to hear toggle
As voice and video calls are made over an internet connection, you may not be able to hear the other party, or they may sound broken up in the following cases. Please ensure that you have a stable internet connection.

The following are the main causes for such issues.
- You are connected to a Wi-Fi network accessible by the general public (we recommend using a 3G or 4G network).
- You are updating apps, or uploading or downloading files.
- The signal is weak.
- Some router settings are affecting your connection.

Both parties should try the following.

1. Update the app to the latest version from the URL below.
2. Restart the device.
3. Turn your speaker off and on again, and try adjusting the volume.
4. Turn on Receive Voice Calls in LINE. Details can be found here.
5. Check the microphone settings. Details can be found here.

Free Voice and Video Calls

Using free voice and video calls toggle
LINE users can make free voice and video calls with their friends.

From the friends list
1. Tap the friend you wish to call on your friends list.
2. Tap Free Call or Video Call on the pop-up that appears.

From chats
You can make calls from chats by following either of the below methods.
- Tap the call button next to the V icon, then tap Free Call or Video Call.
- Tap your friend’s profile photo, then tap Free Call or Video Call from the pop-up window.

If you are using a 3G or 4G network, you will be charged for the packet data used for the call. We recommend using a flat-rate data plan. If the call quality is low, please try using a Wi-Fi connection.

Required specs for free voice and video calls toggle
The following specs are required to use LINE's free voice and video calls.

Free Voice Calls
- iOS: The following devices with iOS 4.3 or higher
iPhone 4 or higher, iPod Touch 4th generation or higher, iPad 2 or higher
- Android: Android OS 2.2 or higher
- Windows Phone: OS 8.0 or higher and LINE version 3.9.0 or higher
- BlackBerry: BlackBerry OS 6 and LINE version 3.0
- PC: You can make free voice calls on both the Windows and Mac versions of LINE.

Free Video Calls
- iOS: iOS 6.0 or higher
- Android: Android OS 2.3 or higher
- Windows Phone: OS 8.0 or higher and LINE version 3.9.0 or higher
Video calls are only supported on the three OSes above.

If you are using a 3G network, you may be charged for the data used for the call. We recommend using a flat-rate data plan. If the call quality is low, please try using a Wi-Fi connection.

Are all free voice and video calls free? toggle
LINE's basic features, including voice calls, video calls, and chats (sending of text, images, and locations, and the use of bots such as the translation or weather bots) are free to use. Some stickers and Coins are available at a fee.

Calling or chatting with users on different mobile service carriers is also free. LINE will not charge you even if you are calling a friend in a different country or using the service while you are traveling.

However, like all other apps, you will be charged by your mobile service carrier for the data used. Depending on your price plan, you may be charged each time you connect to LINE, so we recommend using a flat-rate data plan.

If you are using a flat-rate plan, you should not be charged extra for using 3G, 4G LTE, or Wi-Fi data, but please check with your mobile service carrier for details.

Problems with Notifications

Badge (number icon) or N mark will not appear/disappear toggle
Depending on your Wi-Fi connection the badge may not appear or may appear delayed.

Usually, the badge (the number or N mark on the icon) will remain until you check the updated information. If they are not displayed correctly, please try the following steps.

1. Delete any unnecessary apps or data on your device.
2. Restart your device.
3. Update your LINE app from the URL below.
