Verification Codes

Verification code not delivered toggle
If you do not receive the verification code, please enter your phone number at the Form for Resending Code and send yourself a new code.

If you are still unable to receive the SMS, please consider verifying with your Facebook account. Facebook verification is only available on the iOS and Android versions of LINE.

I cannot see the place to enter the verification code. toggle
On some devices, the verification code will be entered automatically.

If you can see the main menu bar displaying Friends, Chats etc., it means that the verification has been successful and you should be able to use LINE as normal!

Verification code not delivered after resending using the Form for Resending Code toggle
If you do not receive the verification code after waiting more than 10 minutes, please contact us using the Problem Report Form.

LINE also offers Facebook verification in addition to SMS verification.
If you have a Facebook account, please consider using it for verification.
*Facebook verification is only available on the iOS and Android versions of LINE.

Why do errors keep occurring after typing in the verification number? toggle
If an error message appears during the verification process, please try restarting the app and the device, if necessary. Please note that if you stay on the verification screen for too long, you may be shown an error message.

Please see the below information on how to register as a new user. Steps may vary slightly according to the device you are using.

1. Start LINE.
2. Tap New Users. If you wish to carry over your previous LINE account instead, please select LINE User Login.
3. Enter your country and phone number, then tap Next.
4. Read our terms and privacy policy. If you agree, tap Agree with Terms and Verify.
5. Tap OK to send yourself the verification SMS.
6. Enter the verification code received via SMS and tap Next. On some devices, the verification code received will be entered automatically.
7. Select whether or not to use your contacts list to enable your friends who are already using LINE to be automatically added to your Friends list. Please read the instructions and select the appropriate options for Auto Add Friends & Allow Others to Add, then tap OK at the bottom.
8. Enter your display name and a profile photo if you wish to do so, then tap Register.
9. If you want to register your email to LINE, please enter your email address and a password and select Register Now. If you do not want to register one, select Register Later.

If you are still experiencing difficulties, even after following the above please answer the following questions and contact us via our Problem Report Form.

Cannot receive SMS messages toggle
If you cannot receive SMS messages, please verify using your Facebook account. *Facebook verification is only available on the iOS and Android versions of LINE.

If you cannot receive SMS or verify with Facebook, we are sorry to say that you will not be able to register to LINE.

Carrying Over

What does it mean to carry over a LINE account? toggle
If you have registered an email address, when you change or reformat your device, you can carry over and continue using the account you have been using.

Please note that you cannot carry over your device by linking your Facebook account on Windows Phone, Blackberry, Nokia and Firefox OS smartphones.

What data can be transferred via account carry over? toggle
Please refer to the lists below for data that can and cannot transferred via account carry over.

Can be transferred
- Friends list (including groups)
- Profile settings (profile photo, name, Status Message, ID)
- Timeline
- Right to use LINE stickers (including gifted stickers)

Cannot be transferred
- Chat history
- Data from inegrated apps (LINE GAME, LINE PLAY etc.)

Please note integrated apps cannot be used on Windows Phone, Blackberry, Nokia and Firefox OS smartphones.

How do I carry over my account with an email address? toggle
Please register an email address on your device before carying over your account.

- Windows Phone, Firefox OS registration steps.

To carry over your account:
1. Start LINE and tap LINE User Login.
2. Enter the email address and password you registered on your previous device and tap Login or Load.
3. Enter the verification code.

Using LINE on Multiple Devices

Can I use the same LINE account from multiple devices? toggle
We are sorry to say that you cannot access a single account from multiple devices using the app version of LINE. However we do have a PC version of LINE (details follow).

Please note, you cannot use the same account on 2 or more smartphones. Also, for tablets and smartphones, if you have the LINE APP installed on each device, you cannot use the same LINE account for both the LINE apps.
You can only verify one smartphone per mobile phone number/email address.

To register LINE for use on a different device, please make sure that you have another phone number or email address available for each device.
★If you access the same LINE account from another device using the same email address/phone number, your LINE account will be automatically deleted from the previous device.

If you wish to use LINE on your PC, you can access the same LINE account as the one on your smartphone by using the PC version of LINE.
To access the PC version of LINE, please register your email address first from the smartphone version of LINE as follows:

5) Register your email address and password

Security

Why does LINE utilize the contact information on my Smartphone? toggle
When users carry out the procedures listed below, LINE will access the information required in the users’ contacts list/address book to make it easy for users to find their close friends: (Only the telephone numbers and mobile email addresses in your contact information will be transferred to our servers. All information will be encrypted.)

1. At the registration screen, when users select OK at the “Your Address Book will be sent to LINE’s server” dialogue.
2. When the Auto Add Friends function is switched ON in Settings or when users push the circular icon next to the Last Auto Add dialogue, and then select OK at the “Your Address Book will be sent to LINE’s server” dialogue.

LINE will add mutual contacts to your Friends list automatically. If only one of you has the other as a contact, the one who has the contact information will be added to the other's Friend Recommendations list, while the recommended person will be added to the other's Friends list.

Your own phone number, and other information obtained from your contacts list/address book (phone numbers and email addresses) will not be disclosed and will be protected as follows:

1. Your contact information will be used only if you agree to the terms & conditions of LINE when signing up. The terms and conditions describe when and how LINE will use your personal information.
2. If you agree to allow LINE to find your friends, the telephone numbers and mobile email addresses in your contacts list/address book will be sent to our servers.
At this time, the required contact information will be encrypted and securely transferred to our server.
3. We use encrypted text when comparing your information with existing user information.

Can my phone number, LINE ID, or email be seen by other people? toggle
LINE will never disclose your registered phone number, ID or email address to any third parties. Such information will only be disclosed if you do so yourself.

Only your display name, profile image and 'What’s Up?' messages on LINE are available to be seen by other users.

No, users who are not in your chat cannot see what you type. LINE is secure.

Someone is impersonating me on LINE. toggle
If users select to send their phonebook data to LINE’s servers upon registering to LINE, phone numbers in their phone books will be used to search for their friends who are LINE users.
If we find those users, they will appear in the user's [Friends] list under the names registered in the user's phonebook.

Therefore if you have stopped using your number and someone else obtains it, a third party may be registered on your friends' [Friends] list under your name.

Please ensure that your friends do not have you registered under multiple phone numbers/mobile email addresses within their phonebook, and also check that they have not saved you under any details which are out of date such as previous phone numbers.

Why did I receive a login notification that I don't recognize? toggle

If you received a message saying that you have logged in to a smartphone, please see this article.

 

If you log in to LINE using the PC or Windows 8 version, you will receive a login notification on your smartphone. If you do not recognize the login notification, we recommend taking the following measures to protect your account’s security.

 

1. Disable logins from other devices

By turning the “Allow Login” setting to OFF using the smartphone version of LINE, you can disable logins from PC or Windows 8 versions.

In addition, your account will be logged off from all other devices as soon as this setting is set to OFF.

 

Steps:

a. Go to More > Settings > Accounts.

b. Set Allow Login to OFF.

 

Please Note: These links only work on smartphones.

 

2. Change your password.

I received a chat message saying I logged in to a smartphone. toggle
If you received a message saying that you have logged into the PC or Windows 8 version of LINE or LINE STORE, please see this article.

If you log in using your email address, you will receive a chat message on LINE.

If you don't remember logging in, there is a possibility that a third party has logged in using your email address and password. If you received the chat message even when you haven't logged in, please confirm the below:

If you can use your LINE account
There is a possibility a third party has logged into your account using another smartphone. Please change your password immediately.

Service

Does it cost money to use LINE? toggle
The standard features of LINE can be used free of charge. Some items such as Coins and Stickers are chargeable.

However, you will need to pay for the data usage charged by your mobile phone company. You may be charged a data usage fee by your mobile phone company if you do not subscribe to an unlimited data plan, or if you exceed the data usage limit of your plan. We recommend subscribing to an unlimited data plan.

Is LINE available overseas? toggle
LINE is available anywhere in the world, as long as you can connect to a 3G or Wi-Fi network. You can use the service for free over Wi-Fi, however, as with any other apps, you may be charged a data usage fee on the 3G network, depending on your network usage.

Please check with your phone company about roaming fees before using LINE overseas on your Smartphone.

Of course, LINE is free and will not even charge you for international calls!

How do I use the PC version of LINE? toggle
To use the PC version of LINE you will need to register an email to your LINE account on your smartphone or tablet using the steps below. You cannot register as a new user from PC version.

1. Register your email address on your smartphone following these instructions.

2. Download LINE on your PC from the following webpage.

3. Log in to the PC version of LINE using the email address and password registered in step 1.
